Memorial Health System CEO Harold Courtois Announces Retirement After 51 Years in Healthcare

After more than five decades of dedicated service in the healthcare industry, Harold Courtois, CEO of Memorial Health System and Affiliate Hospital Administrator in Abilene, announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2025.

Courtois, who often refers to himself as an “old lab junkie,” began his career as a Medical Technologist before transitioning into administration. His guiding philosophy—“do what’s right for the patient”—shaped his leadership approach, fostering innovation and empowerment among his teams. “You’re only as strong as your weakest leader,” he often says, a belief that drove him to mentor and support department managers, enabling them to grow into strong, capable leaders.

His career has taken him across multiple healthcare organizations, including Russell Regional Hospital, Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, Emeritus Senior Living, and Good Samaritan Hospital, among others. Along the way, he served as president and board member for various organizations, most recently working closely with the Kansas Hospital Association to advocate for patient care at the state and national levels.

Reflecting on his time in Abilene, Courtois expressed gratitude for the friendships and support he has received. “I will always feel a strong connection to Abilene. It was one of the most welcoming communities I have lived in,” he said. While the decision to retire was not an easy one, Courtois looks forward to spending more time with his wife and family. “I have never met anyone who said, ‘I wish I had worked more,’ but I have met several who wished they had spent more time with their family. I’m looking forward to that next chapter.”

“We are grateful for Harold’s leadership and the lasting impact he has made during his eight years with the organization,” said Tony Geiger, chairman of the board of directors for Memorial Health System. “His vision and dedication have helped shape a culture that will endure for years to come. We wish him the best in his retirement.”
